When any new mobile device launches you can be sure there will be fans that will keep the device no matter the issues and there will be those that hate it for no specific reason. Netbooks suffered this fate when early Linux-powered units were returned in droves.

This week we reported that the return rates on the Pre were as high as 40% according to one analyst. Wired reports that the 40% return rate for the Pre may be highly exaggerated according to its own analyst surveys. The claim of 40% was based on highly suspect data according to some analysts and the results could be flawed because of that.

Analyst Michael Gartenberg told Wired, “I would suspect that the Pre return rates would be in line or a little lower than the average smartphone. Most consumers who bought the Pre were early adopters who were waiting for the phone and knew what they are buying into at this point.”
