Did Palm Investor make a rookie mistake comparing Pre to a 2-year old iPhone?

Roger McNamee has a 39 percent stake in Palm so of course he has every right to spread the Pre-gospel any way he likes.  That however does not excuse him from making a rookie mistake of comparing a 2-year old technology iPhone 1.0 to the Palm Pre.  Of course the new Pre phone powered by webOS will beat out the iPhone 1.0 and iPhone 3G.

“You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone.  Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.”

Duh!  Most iPhone owners aren’t going to be using the old iPhone.  Why, you might ask? Because they’re going to get the Pre as McNamee suggested, right? Right?  Right? Hell freaking (maybe) no!  McNamee is making a gigantic assumption that Apple has been sitting on their ass the past year.

“Think about it — If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market,” McNamee said. “Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to buy.”

I love the Pre as I’ve seen it at CES09 and MWC09, and how it outshines the iPhone/iPhone 3G along with the rest of the new phones I saw at earlier this, but wait a big-fat-minute here folks!  Why isn’t anyone raising concerns as to how the Palm Pre will compare to the next iPhone?

On another note, no matter how cool a new phone may be; it’s no competition when it comes to money.   That’s right, hard earned cash.  No, I’m not talking about shelling out money for the Pre, but already given to Apple for apps, games and accessories for the iPhone or iPhone 3G (especially with the way the economy is going!).

We’ll know sooner or later how all this plays out.  I hope for McNamee and Palm’s sake, I hope Apple doesn’t rain on their parade.  Pre’s success is life and death for Palm.
