So I received the Treo Pro from Sprint this morning to review on PhoneMag.com. I know My Pre is suppose to be all about Pre so why I am I writing about the Treo Pro? I’d like to briefly talk about a couple of the physical aspects on the Treo Pro that has been carried over to the Pre that I like. For starters, the piano black shell feels great to the touch and the QWERTY keyboard is pretty comfortable to type on.

One of the key features Palm is pushing on the Treo Pro is Internet Explorer Mobile 6.0. I’m still testing it out so not much to report other than the support for Flash Lite 1.3 with Active X Player. It works pretty well even if the video is embedded inside a webpage. The Active X player also features full screen mode, and the quality of the video, depending on the source, is decent when streamed over WiFi. Check out the video below (the Palm Pre featured on Jimmy Fallon’s show last night) and see the quality for yourself. Palm already announced that Flash will be available on the Pre, so I wonder if the quality / features will look similar to what we see here on the Treo Pro?
Final thoughts: The Treo Pro is an alright smartphone for $199.99, due out on March 15, but it’s no Pre. If you’re a die-hard Windows Mobile person and happen to really like the design, look and feel of the Treo Pro AND you’re in desperate need of a new smartphone on Sprint, then by all means take the jump and buy it. Otherwise, my recommendation is to wait a few more months for the Pre. It’s a shame Sprint didn’t release the Treo Pro much earlier; if it had shown up around the November/December time frame, it would have had a chance of some success. As of right now, for timing if no fault of the handset itself, it’s not looking too good.
