My Pre Week In Review: Week 10 2009

palm-pre-rm-ces-main-600-400x239Tooting our own horn, BIG news for us this week was rebranding PreCommunity to MyPre.com. Our favorite techno-junkie Vincent details out why the move was made, but the gist of it is this: the Pre is hopeful to change the way we use mobile phones and data on the go. Palm wants it to be your phone. This is where we want users to come to get the latest news, rumors, and helpful tips on integrating the Pre and webOS into your everyday life.

Palm investor Roger McNamee made some stirring comments this week that got a lot of people thinking. Sure, the Palm Pre’s functionality, as we know it, should beat out iPhone 1.0 (as McNamee is suggesting). But can Palm/Sprint really bank on AT&T customers ditching their iPhones when their original contracts are up? With all that money spent on apps, accessories, and a possible upgrade to iPhone 3G a year later, who knows. And with the possibility of a new iPhone iteration sometime this year, will the iFaithful find enough promise in webOS to switch? Time will tell.

Palm released preliminary Q3 earnings results, and they aren’t pretty. Money coming in for the quarter was almost half of what was expected on Wall Street, explained by Palm’s CEO as wavering faith in legacy devices and the current economic climate. Needless to say, Palm really needs the Pre to take off, and take off well. It could very well decide the company’s future in the mobile industry.
