Notes from Palm’s Investor Conference Presentation

Palm announced back on August 4th that Palm’s Chief Financial Officer Douglas Jeffries was scheduled to present on Tuesday, August 11th, at the Pacific Crest Technology Forum in Vail, Colorado. The company invited investors to listen to the audio only webcast at http://investor.palm.com/events.cfm. Well, the notes are in.

Q: Next Steps in Launching webOS – Response from the developer community? A: We believe that having apps is fundamental. High priority internally. We’re in a Beta phase with the App Catalog. In the background we’re working with developers to expand, thousands of developers have downloaded it, we’d like to move faster, but we want to make sure that developers have a great experience. Also want a great experience for customers.

There were also comments on what the Pre has in common with Apple’s iPhone, with Palm suggesting that both devices were “iconic” and that carriers were generally willing to pay a premium for that.  Nonetheless, we should expect to see more smartphones running webOS in the near future; positioning the Palm brand in the European markets was highlighted as a key priority for the new range.

In the end, though, Palm did not answer the main questions that everyone is waiting on. How many Palm Pre phones have been sold? And, When are we going to see a healthy dose of apps in the App Catalog? The good folks at Precentral got all the notes to share with the Pre followers out there, but we’re still left with a lot more basic questions than we’d like to be.
