Palm Pre DIY EVDO WiFi Router [Video]

Okay, so we all know the Palm Pre does not tether – officially that is – since that might upset Sprint. Well, that doesn’t mean you can not look elsewhere for your tethering needs. Enter the homebrew app My Tether.

My Tether turns the Pre into either a wired USB or wireless Bluetooth modem, or a WiFi hotspot. It’s like having your very own MiFi WiFi hotspot anywhere in range of Sprint’s 3G EVDO Rev A signal. It can be set to use WEP encryption over WiFi, together with disabling the Pre’s sleep mode so as to avoid shutting off the data connection (as well as turning off the display to save battery).

All this sounds great, right? The bad news, at least for some people. You have to root your Pre in order to install My Tether. This requires a little more effort than loading a standard “official” app. Happily there’s a useful tutorial here which explains just how to do that. And remember not to abuse your data usage, Sprint won’t be happy about it and could charge you extra or even cut off your connection altogether. You attempt hacks such as My Tether at your own risk.
