Tom Canrad, CEO of Pandora, has been one of the few to get a good glimpse of the software that makes the Palm Pre the amazing device that it is. Conrad had a chance to sit down with Palm Infocenter to talk about the details of webOS software development.
Even though webOS appears to be a big mixture of CSS, JavaScript and HTML, webOS is really more than just a big browser. This operating system has direct access to the local files as well as user interface elements. Conrad also reaffirmed the fears that the webOS platform’s web-based programming interface is not exactly suited for handheld gaming.
He did express that Palm will be addressing this with a different approach by means of the integrated Flash support or even some sort of lower-level API for those who would like to use the OMAP processor directly. Not all hope is lost for gamers, but we don’t suspect it will be as in-depth as the iPhone has become in terms of gaming because of the nature of the operating system.
