The second round of Sprint’s Palm Pre FAQ has been published, and there are some juicy new details about the smartphone.  Of particular interest are Office 2007 compatibility – though it’s not made clear if that’s mobile viewers for Word, Excel, etc, or simply Outlook 2007 synchronization – together with multiple simultaneous IM conversations.  The Pre’s backup functionality will be a free inclusion, which almost makes up for the fact that incoming calls will be sent to voicemail if the handset is hooked up to a computer in USB Mode.

Custom downloaded ringtones will be supported, as will using your own music as a ringtone.  Similarly picture messaging via MMS is possible, although Sprint warn that there’s no way to crop images on-device: “be aware of any size limitations the receiving person may have”.  Their suggestion is to turn down the camera resolution manually, but we’d prefer to see an option to shrink-down photos when you attach them to a new MMS, like just about every other picture-message capable phone we’ve used.  It’s unclear whether Sprint mean shrinking when they say “crop”.

There’s some bad news, though, for anyone hoping to use Family Locator with the Pre, which won’t be supported at launch, and we’re a little more disappointed with the absence of video recording.  Sprint say that will be addressed with a firmware update, but of course there’s no telling exactly how soon “on the way” actually means.  Also in the works is a Pictbridge wireless printing profile for the Pre’s Bluetooth stack.
