Time will be needed to gauge Pre success

With all the official reviews, for the Pre coming in the phone has drawn its share of criticisms, but for the most part reviewers agree that the Pre is a decent mobile phone. With the launch of the Pre, coming this weekend there will be a myriad of comparisons to the iPhone launch — which was epic.

ZDNet reports that gauging the true success of the Pre will take time. However, it notes that the launch will be closely watched with analysts guessing how many Pres were sold and more. Come Monday, ZDNet figures we will end up with many noting that the launch was not great. The publication claims we will get reports that Palm failed to move millions of units, doesn’t have what it takes to compete, lacks apps, relies on Sprint, and failed to come close to the iPhone launch.

Those claims will likely prove accurate, but Palm is expected to move 1.9 million units this year and 3 million n 2010. Many view the Pre as Palm’s last chance to survive and I bet Palm will grab it with both hands and work hard to remedy any major concerns that users of the device have. ZDNet recons that the Pre has already saved Palm in a way, the splash the Pre made alone has brought Palm back to relevance. Think about it, before the Pre when was the last time anyone was excited about a Palm product?
