We all know Palm said webOS was going to be a great platform, until this Monday – Oct. 5th – we found out it will be even greater; they will let webOS be free of any restrictions that other platforms suffer. Palm revealed that it would be enabling developers to release their applications via the web, rather than solely through the App Catalog.

Palm will provide a link for each new title submitted in this way, but not run the apps through checks as it does for the existing App Catalog. Meanwhile they’ve also confirmed that they’ll be waiving the regular $99 annual fee for webOS developers if the software they’re producing is open-source. But, for those developers that will be distributing closed source apps, they still have to pay the $99 annual fee, as well as $50 per app.
According to Palm; “Every App will receive a unique URL, allowing developers to freely promote their applications online and enabling customers to download and install the application directly from the cloud to their phone using Palm’s unique over-the-air process.” And if the distribution of the app is via the Palm App Catalog, this apps will be subject to review by Palm, and developers will pay a nominal per-application fee of $50. To ease the cost, “Palm will create a unique promotional marketplace where developers can utilize an auction process to obtain prominent placement in the Palm App Catalog and find new customers.”
